What is Razor Burn?

When you shave, you are actually removing a layer of skin along with your stubble. Your body treats this as an injury and increases blood flow to the area to stimulate healing of the skin. This causes redness which normally passes in a few minutes of shaving. But if you’ve been a little heavy handed, are using a blunt blade or don’t have a proper shaving technique then you can experience lasting pain and irritation after each shave. This constant irritation is Razor Burn.

What’s the difference between Razor Burn and Razor rash?

There is no difference, Razor Rash and Razor Burn are both the same thing. They both mean painful irritation caused by shaving. Also known as Shaving Burn and Shaving Rash.

What is the difference between Razor Rash and Shaving Bumps?

Razor Rash is the irritation caused by shaving. Shaving Bumps are ingrown hairs. When you shave you remove a layer of skin. Sometimes the skin heals over the hair follicle and the hair shaft becomes trapped underneath. As it grows it causes little raised lumps to appear in the shaved area. These are known as Shaving Bumps.

Topical Acne Products
: Any acne products which contain between 2.5% to 5% Benzoyl Peroxide can help reduce and prevent razor rash. Just use on the shaved area.

There is a shaving Crème available called Benzashave which actually contains benzoyl peroxide so you might want to consider getting this to help keep that shaving burn under control :)

Aspirin: Simply dissolve 2 uncoated aspirin in a teaspoon of warm water. It should become a slightly runny paste. Rub this onto your skin immediately after shaving and leave there for 30 seconds. Rinse off thoroughly.

Tend Skin: Available on the internet. Good but reported to be a harsh astringent.  You might want to use it sparingly.

Neosporin ointment: Common over-the-counter skin healing cream.

Zinc Oxide cream: Another easy to get over -the-counrt skin healing cream. Works on nappy rash so rasor burn should be no problem.

Hydrocortisone. Some people recommend the use of a hydrocortisone preparation for treating razorburn. I wouild be very wary of using something that cotains cortisone as repeated use can thin your sjkin and cause more problems than it worth. It is reported that constant use of cortisone preparations can cause you skin to become redder and more irritated when you stop using it.

Apple Cider Vinegar: Dab this all-natural wonder product onto freshly shaved skin. Leave it to dry and then rinse well.

A more effective home remedy for razor burn would be a cream or gel that contains Aloe Vera. This natural plant product is widely reknowned for it's healing powers.

Beta Glucan is a very effective healing product that is derived from oats. It is safe and effective.

Lavender Essential Oil: Soak a washcloth in a basin of hot water with 1 drop of lavender essential oil (Lavandula angustifolia). Gently ring out the cloth and apply it to your skin, repeating the process several times.

Natural, Soothing After-shave Lotion: Steep 1 tablespoon each of DRIED COMFREY LEAVES and DRIED CALENDULA LEAVES in 1/2 cup of DISTILLED WITCH HAZEL EXTRACT for two weeks.

Strain, and combine 1/4 cup of the herb-infused witch hazel with 1/4 cup of ROSE WATER.

Add 1/4 teaspoon of VEGETABLE GLYCERIN, 5 drops of LAVENDER ESSENTIAL OIL, and 5 drops of SANDALWOOD ESSENTIAL OIL.

Shake well before using. Store in a sterilized bottle, in a cool, dark place. I keep mine in the fridge for extra soothing coldness.

This should last for around six months.

Cocoa Butter: Rub into freshly shaved skin. Will keep skin soft and moisturised.

Calendula Cream: Will reduce inflammation. Apply to freshly shaved skin or directly onto irritated skin.

Razor Burn Mask: Mash strawberries and mix with sour cream. You can get relief in ten minutes flat on applying it on the face or legs. Use twice a week to refresh and calm the skin.

Witch Hazel: Natural skin toner with healing power. Apply as necessary.

How To Have The Perfect Shave

With the current trend towards Male Grooming kno
wing how to shave, and by shave I mean WETSHAVE, without ending up needing reconstructive surgery or a blood transfusion is now an ESSENTIAL SKILL for all men.

Unfortunately, many men have lost the skill of shaving.

These days we just slap on a bit of foam or gel, hack away at our faces with inferior blades and suffer from nicks, red blotches and razor rash.

But all this pain and embarrassment can be avoided with just some simple changes to our shaving kit and our shaving routine.

Let's start with...THE BASICS!

All the experts agree for a great shave you will need a shaving kit that contains…

1. A Badger-Hair Shaving Brush.

Besides a sharp razor, this is THE most important piece of kit you need in order to have the perfect shave.

Using a shaving brush will revolutionize your shaving experience…yet ironically, this was a shaving standard up until a few decades ago.

The bristles of the brush will hold hot water which will mix with your shaving cream to produce a thick luxuriant lather that will suspend your whiskers and give your blade a better chance of cutting them cleanly without any tugging.

It also gently exfoliates your skin, removing dirt and dead skin which may clog your blade, reducing its effectiveness.

So go and buy a shaving brush and make sure it’s a badger-hair one. You can get a decent one for around $30.00

With proper care your shaving brush can last 20 years or more so they are well worth the investment.

The best quality ones are recommended HERE

2. A Sharp Razor

First off, if you are using safety razors…bin them now. They’re just not of a high enough quality to give you a good shave.

You need to move on to using at least a double blade cartridge razor.

They are far superior to disposables and you’ll notice the difference immediately.

Of course, you can now get cartridge razors with three or four blades.

The attitude of the manufacturers is “the more the merrier”…and you pay for the privilege.

Personally, I get a great shave from twin blade razorblades so I don’t feel the need for anything more.

There has been resurgence in the old style Double-Edge Safety Razors that our fathers and grandfathers would have used. They really give a great shave, are safer than cutthroat razors and easier to use too!

3. A HIGH-QUALITY glycerin-based Shaving Soap or Crème

If you want the best shave possible you need to look to Europe…not your local drug store or mall.

Shaving Soaps and crèmes ARE THE PRODUCT YOU NEED,,,FORGET THE GELS AND FOAMS. They come in either jars or tubes…like toothpaste tubes.

They are more expensive than regular foams and gels but they have a number of qualities that puts them far above the usual stuff you can get in the drugstore for under $5

First off, they are made with the highest quality ingredients. Nothing like the products you get in a can.

Then, there’s the smell of quality shaving. The scents of these top-shelf creams will make you actually look forward to shaving. They have incredible aromas like lavender, lemon, violet, avocado or lime. You’ll truly come to love shaving just for the scent alone! I recommend the Geo F THUMPER Range.

Users of proper high-quality shaving crème swear that their razor blades stay sharper for longer too!

4. Other Essentials

Shaving Oil: As the name suggests, shaving oil is an oil that you rub into your face prior to shaving. It comes in little bottles and lasts for months as you only use two or three drops per shave. When you use shaving oil, the blade glides over the thin layer of oil instead of your skin which reduces irritation.

Some people use shaving oil in addition to shaving crème for extra lubrication…there’s no harm in it but if you’re using a shaving brush and quality shaving crème it’s not essential.

Shaving oil is also great as a pre-shave treatment if you’re using an electric shaver.

I recommend Taylor Of Old Bond St, Camomile Shaving Oil available HERE

Moisturizing After-shave Balm: Use a good quality non-alcohol product. This will keep your face moist and prevent your skin drying out after you’ve shaved.

I recommend Geo F Thumpers Skin Food Range available HERE

Shaving Mirror: Sadly the normal, rigid bathroom mirror is not the best piece of equipment when you’re trying to shave as you have to turn your head to shave correctly. Any kind of an angle-poise mirrors are great for shaving.

SHAVING TECHNIQUE

Here is the specific routine experts recommend you follow to ensure you have the perfect shave.

1. Splash some hot water on your face to keep it moist.

2.
Rub three drops of shaving oil into your stubble.

3.
Soak your shaving brush in the hot water for about 10 seconds. This will allow the hairs to absorb some of the water.

4.
Dab some of the shaving crème onto the bristles of the shaving brush.

5.
Using circular motions rub the brush on your stubble to work up a nice thick lather.

6.
Holding the razor firmly but not pressing it into your skin, shave DOWNWARDS along your face and neck going WITH the direction your stubble grows. One swipe is enough. Don’t keep going over the same area again and again.

7. Wet your face again, lather up again and lightly shave UPWARDS to remove the remaining hairs.

8. Rinse off remaining foam and splash your face with cold water.

9. Pat face dry

11. Apply moisturizing balm and let to soak in.

12. Apply some aftershave…not too much…any woman will tell you how much is enough...or too much!

That's it. You've had the perfect shave according to the experts so why do you still have rasor burn?

THERE ARE SOME IMPORTANT STEPS MISSING FROM THE EXPERTS RECOMMENDATIONS.
